Celebrating success is something that we within the construction industry are generally poor at doing, whilst good achievements are recognised amongst colleagues and team members we are all frequently distracted by competing demands upon our time. In May 2024 the new £60M Multi-storey Car Park project at Bristol was still primarily a quarrying site, as it had been since activities commenced on site in November 2024.
The foundations were nearing completion, and the frame specialist was itching to get their resource producing the key element of the scheme, the programme for which was considered buy the majority within the Team as “challenging” and the chance of early handover was not even considered as topic of conversation, quite the reverse, with focus on actions to promote maintaining the programme.
A real team effort that we, QuantumCLS (undertaking the roles of NEC4 Project Manager and Cost Consultant) are SO PROUD of being a part of this immense success, it really is something that we strive to achieve on all of our projects and genuinely take great pleasure in sharing in success with our clients. Developing the delivery strategy early in the lifecycle of the scheme and working with the Team to maintain this and deliver in a proactive and collaborative way with an informed client in an environment where ALL Ego’s were left outside the door throughout. Yes, there have been several difficult meetings, but the way that the issues have been overcome is a shining example of what collaboration is. It’s all about focus on the right things, doing what you say you are going to do and of course clear concise communication amongst all team members as well as accountability. These are significant differentiating factors, which many claim to operate but rarely deliver. It is one of our Mantra’s, ask anyone in the QuantumCLS team.
There is still some way to go to complete all the works, but the first milestones to operational use have been met ahead of expectations and contractual dates and that is something that we should all take a little while to recognise, appreciate and enjoy. These moments don’t come along all that often in this often adversarial industry.
We are currently forecasting delivery to budget and programme, which for such a large infrastructure scheme with inherent risks in its location as well as topography is accolade to the procurement strategy and the vision and clients support in developing collaborative arena for the Team to flourish. Seconding a key client representative into the site office for the duration the works was a big commitment, but a fundamental one that increased the opportunity of success managing the multiple stakeholders.
